FORM T1213

CRA Form T1213 – Reduce Tax Deductions at Source (Canada)

What is Form T1213?

Form T1213 – Request to Reduce Tax Deductions at Source is a form submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to ask permission for less tax to be deducted from your paycheque throughout the year.

Normally, Canadians receive tax refunds after filing their tax return.
T1213 allows eligible taxpayers to access that money earlier, by reducing payroll deductions during the year instead of waiting for a refund.

Who Can Apply for T1213?

You may apply if you expect to have significant deductions or credits that reduce your overall tax payable.

Common eligible situations include:

1. Employees With Regular Deduutions

  • RRSP contributions (including Spousal RRSP)
  • Childcare expenses
  • Employment-related expenses not reimbursed
  • Union dues or professional fees (not already deducted)

2. Investment & Property Owners

  • Rental property losses
  • Interest paid on loans used to earn investment income
  • Carrying charges related to investments

3. Support & Family Payments

  • Court-ordered spousal or child support payments
  • Eligible support obligations reducing taxable income

4. Other Situations

  • Large annual deductions that occur every year
  • Predictable tax credits or deductions supported by documentation

⚠️ One-time or uncertain deductions are usually not approved.

Who Should NOT Apply?

T1213 is not recommended if:

  • Your income or deductions change frequently
  • You cannot provide supporting documents
  • Your deductions are uncertain or one-time
  • You rely on refunds as forced savings

CRA prefers consistent, predictable deductions.

When Can You Apply?

  • You can apply at any time during the year
  • Best practice: early in the year (January–March)
  • CRA approval usually applies only for that tax year

⏳ Processing time: typically 4–8 weeks, sometimes longer during peak tax season.

How Does the Process Work?

Step 1: Complete Form T1213

Provide:

  • Personal details
  • Employer information
  • Detailed list of expected deductions
  • Estimated annual amounts

Step 2: Attach Supporting Documents

Examples:

  • RRSP contribution plan or proof
  • Childcare contracts or receipts
  • Rental income/expense statements
  • Loan agreements showing interest for investments

Incomplete applications may be denied or delayed.

Step 3: Submit to CRA

  • Mail or submit as instructed by CRA
  • Keep copies for your records

Step 4: CRA Review & Approval

If approved:

  • CRA sends you an approval letter
  • You give that letter to your employer or payroll department
  • Payroll reduces tax deductions accordingly

CRA does not contact your employer directly.

What Happens After Approval?

  • Your net pay increases
  • Less tax is deducted at source
  • Your year-end refund will usually be smaller or zero
  • You must re-apply each year

If your situation changes mid-year, CRA may require adjustments.

Important Risks & Responsibilities

  • If deductions are overestimated, you may owe tax at filing time
  • CRA can deny or revoke approval
  • Interest may apply if taxes are underpaid
  • You remain responsible for accurate reporting

T1213 is a cash-flow tool, not tax avoidance.
